Assam Intensifies Crackdown on Encroachment, Targets ‘Kudratpur’ Renaming in Guwahati

Guwahati: In a resolute move against the pervasive issue of illegal encroachments, the Assam government today affirmed its unwavering commitment to reclaim government and forest lands across the state, including in the verdant hill areas of Guwahati city.

Speaking firmly on the matter, Minister Pijush Hazarika highlighted the continuous and stringent measures undertaken by the administration in recent days.

Minister Hazarika underscored that while certain sensitive districts warrant particular attention, the crackdown extends unequivocally to urban centres like Guwahati. He specifically drew attention to the egregious situation at Adingiri Hill in the city, where encroachers have not only illegally occupied the land but have audaciously rechristened it ‘Kudratpur.’

“This is not just about land. This is about intention,” the Minister asserted, adding, “When people start renaming places they have encroached upon, it shows they are trying to change the identity of that place. Our government under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been warning about this for a long time.” He emphasised that the act of renaming a prominent hill within Guwahati’s heart signifies a deeper malaise, transcending mere land ownership to a pressing concern for safeguarding Assam’s cultural roots and identity. “We have said again and again; this is not merely a land issue. This is about protecting our culture, our identity, and our roots,” Hazarika reiterated with conviction.

Furthermore, the Minister voiced profound concern over the escalating changes in population patterns witnessed in various parts of the state. He warned that systematic encroachment, particularly in forest lands within and around Guwahati, poses a grave threat to Assam’s cherished heritage and its future trajectory, potentially spawning larger societal issues if left unchecked. Hazarika confirmed that eviction notices have already been served to those illegally occupying these lands, assuring that all actions are being undertaken strictly in accordance with lawful procedures. “Our fight will continue. We are committed to protecting the land, culture, and future of Assam,” he concluded, signaling a prolonged and determined effort by the state government.
