Assam: Jailed Poet Barshashree Buragohain To Sit in Exam Today

Guwahati: Undergraduate student Barshashree Buragohain who has been imprisoned for more than two months will appear in her semester test on Saturday (July 16), after a court gave her permission to do so.

She was detained in May as a result of her Facebook post, which purportedly contained a poem promoting the outlawed group ULFA-I.

The court said that Barshashree would have to show up for the exam at Golaghat Prison in Assam under strict security.

The 19-year-old has been detained since May for allegedly endorsing an outlawed outfit in a Facebook post. The police have stated that her detention was “as per law” despite rising calls for her release and an outcry on social media.

Barshashree Buragohain was arrested and charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act or UAPA on May 18 this year in Uriamghat in Golaghat district for her post titled ‘Akou Korim Rashtra Droh’ (will again rebel against the nation).

According to Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) GP Singh, “This is not a case of sedition; it is a case of waging war against nation, which is non-negotiable for any law enforcement body. Therefore, as per the mandate of law, the case has been recorded.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the police were persuaded by the parents of the second-year mathematics student at Jorhat’s DCB College to free her from custody so that she may sit for her exams, and Singh responded.

Singh, in a Twitter post earlier, said, “In her Facebook post, she makes a clear demand to engage in waging war against the State. We are required by law to bring charges against someone who publicly announces support for a prohibited organisation and the intention to wage war against the Indian state. After following the correct procedures, a chargesheet must be submitted to a court of law. Allow the law to run its course “.
