Assam: Janata Bhawan Sets Benchmark as India’s First Green Secretariat with Remarkable Energy Savings
Assam: Janata Bhawan, India’s pioneering green Secretariat, has achieved a landmark milestone by nearly halving its conventional electricity consumption, resulting in substantial financial and environmental benefits. The shift to sustainable energy practices has slashed electricity bills by over Rs 80 lakh during the July-November period, year-on-year.
In 2023, the Secretariat consumed 18,18,420 units of electricity exclusively from APDCL, incurring a bill of Rs 2,23,85,565. By contrast, during the same period in 2024, it utilized a combination of 9,45,706 units from APDCL and 9,45,199 units from solar power, totaling 18,90,905 units. This integration of solar energy reduced the electricity bill to Rs 1,43,07,392, reflecting a cost reduction of Rs 80,78,173.
The transition led to a decrease of 8,72,714 units in conventional energy consumption, showcasing the success of Janata Bhawan’s renewable energy initiatives.
The adoption of solar power has not only minimized environmental impact but also demonstrated financial prudence, setting an example for public institutions across India. By leveraging solar energy, Janata Bhawan has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability while emphasizing the economic viability of green practices.
This achievement positions Janata Bhawan as a model for other institutions, illustrating how forward-thinking energy policies can yield significant ecological and fiscal benefits. The initiative highlights the tangible rewards of renewable energy adoption, paving the way for similar green transformations nationwide.
