Assam Joins Nation in Celebrating International Yoga Day
Guwahati, 21st June: Assam enthusiastically joined the nationwide celebration of International Yoga Day on Friday, with a series of events organized across the state to mark the occasion.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were prominent participants in various yoga events held across different parts of the northeastern state since early morning.
“Yoga for a Fit India, Yoga for All! Participated in the state celebrations of the 10th International Day of Yoga at Tezpur,” Sarma shared on social media platform X.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the 10th International Yoga Day celebrations at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. This event marked Modi’s inaugural visit to the region since beginning his third consecutive term in office.
The theme for this year, “Yoga for Self and Society,” underscores the dual benefits of yoga in enhancing individual well-being and promoting community health.
Since its inception in 2014, International Day of Yoga has seen Modi actively leading celebrations at significant locations such as Kartavya Path in Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, Lucknow, Mysuru, and even at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The event at SKICC aimed to encourage widespread participation and highlight yoga’s advantages, particularly in rural areas.
International Yoga Day, observed annually on June 21, was established by the United Nations following Modi’s proposal during his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014. The UNGA subsequently designated June 21 as International Yoga Day in December 2014.
