Guwahati, August 14 — Junior doctors and students at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) staged a protest today, expressing their solidarity with nationwide demonstrations against the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The protest, organized by the Gauhati Medical College Junior Doctor Association, was held in response to the brutal assault and murder of a colleague in West Bengal, which has sparked outrage across the country. Dr. Kumarjyoti Deka, President of the Junior Doctor Association, emphasized the importance of standing in unity with their peers in West Bengal and other parts of India.
“This is a solidarity protest. A protest has been going on in West Bengal for 3-4 days now. It has been going on all over India. Ours is a protest supporting that. Our colleague at RG Kar Medical College was assaulted and brutally murdered on duty. So, we are opposing this,” Dr. Deka stated.
In addition to the protest, Dr. Deka called on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government to expedite the investigation and ensure that those responsible for the heinous crime are brought to justice. “We request West Bengal Government and CBI to nab the accused soon and they be punished as per law,” he added.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has already begun its investigation, following an order from the Calcutta High Court. A team of senior CBI officers, including medical and forensic experts, arrived in Kolkata earlier today. The team is set to visit the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the body of the trainee doctor was discovered on August 9.
The tragic incident has united the medical community across India, with widespread demands for justice and increased safety measures for healthcare professionals.
