Assam: Karimganj Town Faces Cleanliness Crisis Amid Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday Celebrations
Guwahati, 2nd October: As the nation commemorates the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, emphasizing his legacy of cleanliness and civic duty, Karimganj town stands in stark contrast, showcasing a troubling disregard for these principles. In Kaiba, located just 500 meters from the municipal office, heaps of garbage line the roadside, prompting outrage among local residents.
On this day of national reflection, which coincides with the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya, the streets of Karimganj are marred by litter and waste. Residents express their discontent over the municipality’s apparent negligence in maintaining basic cleanliness standards, especially during a period that celebrates the values Gandhi championed.
“The municipality is supposed to uphold the ideals of cleanliness, but the situation here shows how inactive they are,” stated a visibly frustrated youth Congress state secretary, who joined other locals in voicing their concerns. The lack of action from authorities has led to a growing chorus of calls for accountability regarding the town’s waste management practices.
Residents are demanding immediate intervention to address the cleanliness crisis, emphasizing that neglecting basic sanitation not only disrespects Gandhi’s vision but also endangers public health. The contrasting images of celebration and neglect on such a significant day highlight the urgent need for local authorities to take responsibility and implement effective waste management solutions in Karimganj.
