Assam: Kaziranga National Park Revels in Discovery of Two New Mammalian Species

Guwahati, 2nd February: In the verdant expanse of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, renowned for its one-horned rhinoceroses and diverse ecosystem, wildlife enthusiasts are celebrating the identification of two new mammalian species. The recent discoveries of the binturong, also known as the bearcat (Arctictis binturong), and the small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus), during a water bird enumeration survey, have raised the total count of mammalian species in the park to 37.

The binturong, India’s largest civet, often elusive due to its nocturnal and arboreal nature, was captured on camera by tour guide Chirantanu Saikia during the fifth migratory bird count. Classified under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, its discovery emphasizes the need for conservation efforts.

The small-clawed otter, recognized as the world’s smallest otter species, was sighted post a training program conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India in collaboration with the Assam Forest Department. With partially webbed feet and short claws, these otters exhibit adept hunting skills in aquatic environments, adding a socially vibrant dimension to the park’s ecosystem.

These findings contribute not only to Kaziranga’s biodiversity but also underline its role as a crucial sanctuary for endangered species. The park, a World Heritage Site, spans across Golaghat, Nagaon, and Sonitpur districts, showcasing a rich landscape of forests, elephant grass, reeds, marshes, and pools—a perfect habitat for its inhabitants.

Kaziranga’s fauna, including the Big Five, alongside various other mammals, reflects its conservation success and its pivotal role in preserving India’s natural heritage. The addition of the binturong and small-clawed otter to the park’s diverse wildlife showcases the ongoing commitment to safeguarding biodiversity in this ecological haven.
