Assam: KMSS Leader Umananda Mudoi Moran Arrested in Alleged Extortion Case

Guwahati: Pengeri police have apprehended Umananda Mudoi Moran, the Central Organising Secretary of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), in connection with an alleged extortion attempt targeting a tea estate owner.

The arrest occurred on Monday as Moran was en route from his home to Dicham Satra. This action follows the widespread circulation of an audio recording on social media, which purportedly captures Moran demanding a sum of Rs 20 lakh from Din Dayal Barma, the owner of a tea estate situated in Talap within the Tinsukia district.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that the arrest was prompted by a formal complaint, a First Information Report (FIR), filed by Barma. The case gained significant public and political attention after Digboi legislator Suren Phukan held a press briefing where he publicly played the controversial audio recording, thereby amplifying the scrutiny surrounding the allegations.

Presently, authorities have launched a thorough investigation to ascertain the authenticity of the incriminating audio and to explore the possibility of involvement by other individuals in the purported extortion scheme.
