Assam: Koch Rajbongshi Community Celebrates Cabinet Decision Removing ‘D-Voter’ Status, Awaits ST Inclusion
Nimua, Baksa District, Assam – The Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union convened a press conference on April 6th, marking a significant moment of relief and gratitude for the community. The gathering, held in Nimua, Baksa district, centered on the recent Assam Cabinet decision to revoke the ‘Doubtful Voter’ or ‘D-Voter’ status, a designation that had long plagued members of the Koch Rajbongshi community.
Kapil Dev Singh, the Central Secretary of Akraachur, addressed the assembled media, expressing the community’s profound appreciation for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s decisive action. Singh underscored that the Cabinet’s move was the culmination of sustained dialogue and represented a crucial stride towards rectifying the injustices suffered by the Koch Rajbongshi people. He clarified that the ‘D-Voter’ tag was a consequence of political machinations, leading to the community’s unjust marginalization from social and political spheres for an extended period.
Furthermore, Singh relayed the Chief Minister’s pledge to address the community’s long-standing demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status before the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections. This assurance has instilled a sense of cautious optimism within the community.
Despite the celebration, the Students’ Union issued a firm reminder that their patience is not limitless. They conveyed a clear message that the Koch Rajbongshi community will not remain silent if the government fails to uphold its commitments. The union expressed their earnest hope that the government will act with expediency and integrity to honor its promises, ensuring justice and recognition for the Koch Rajbongshi people.
