Assam: The Kokrajhar District Sessions Court has sentenced Bishnu Basumatary, a resident of Serfanguri in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, to life imprisonment for murdering his wife in 2022.
The judgment, delivered by Sessions Judge Nirmali Talukdar, found Basumatary guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Along with the life sentence, he has been fined Rs. 10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
The court also sentenced Basumatary to seven years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 201 of the IPC for attempting to conceal the crime by disposing of his wife’s body in the Karbona River. He has been fined Rs. 5,000 for this offense, with an additional three months of imprisonment in case of non-payment.
Public Prosecutor Niranjan Roy revealed that the crime occurred on July 31, 2022, after a domestic quarrel. Basumatary killed his wife and later disposed of her body by throwing it into the Karbona River near their residence. The incident came to light during the subsequent investigation, leading to Basumatary’s arrest and trial.
This verdict underscores the judiciary’s commitment to addressing crimes of domestic violence with strict legal consequences.
