Assam: Kokrajhar Medical College Hospital Faces Accreditation Crisis Over Patient Intake Shortfall

Guwahati, 14th June: The newly established Kokrajhar Medical College Hospital (KMCH) in the Bodoland Territorial Region is confronting a severe crisis jeopardizing its accreditation by the National Medical Council (NMC). Assam cabinet minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, also Chairman of the KMCH management Committee, revealed that the NMC has imposed a Rs 2 lakh penalty on KMCH for failing to meet its guidelines for the 2023-24 academic session.

The core issue revolves around patient intake at the hospital. While KMCH is equipped to accommodate 100 students, the NMC mandates a daily patient footfall of 800. Currently, the hospital records only about 300 patients daily, falling short of the required threshold by a significant margin.

In response, the NMC has not only fined KMCH but has also recommended slashing the student intake capacity to 50. Failure to rectify these deficiencies promptly could lead to KMCH losing its NMC accreditation, endangering its operational future.

Additionally, plans to merge KMCH with the Rupnath Brahma Civil Hospital (RNB) have sparked public protests in Kokrajhar. Minister UG Brahma denounced the protests, stressing the crucial need for community support during this critical phase.

KMCH Principal Atul Ch Baro issued a plea for community cooperation, underscoring its pivotal role in resolving the crisis, enhancing patient intake, and safeguarding the college’s accreditation and functionality.

With pressure mounting, KMCH administration is under urgent scrutiny to address these challenges swiftly to avert further penalties and potential disruptions.
