Assam: Landslide at NHPC Forces Closure of Diversion Tunnel

Guwahati, 27th October: Yet another disaster has hit Assam’s Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Power project of the National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) as a diversion tunnel got blocked due to a major landslide, as reported on October 27.

According to sources, a massive landslide led to the closure of the No. 1 diversion tunnel on the left bank of the hydroelectric power project.

Consequently, the water level in the lower part of the project has receded.

Reports indicate that a total of eight diversion tunnels have been closed up to this point.

In September of this year, a massive landslide occurred on the hills to the right of the dam.

It needs to be mentioned that after the construction of the main dam was completed, the diversion tunnels were closed.

However, due to the extensive landslide, the main diversion tunnel was reopened once again.
