Assam Launches “Bhasha Gaurav Saptah” to Celebrate Classical Status of Assamese Language

Guwahati— Assam today inaugurated “Bhasha Gaurav Saptah,” a week-long celebration of its rich linguistic heritage following the recent recognition of Assamese as a classical language.

The event, hailed as a landmark cultural milestone, was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on social media, where he invited citizens from various linguistic backgrounds to join in the festivities dedicated to preserving Assam’s diverse linguistic tapestry.

The celebration, running from November 3 to November 9, will see activities across Assam, with state ministers leading opening ceremonies in different districts to honor Assamese and other regional languages that contribute to the state’s vibrant culture.

“This week, people from various linguistic groups will celebrate their languages and commit themselves to preserving it,” Sarma stated, emphasizing the role of language in fostering unity and cultural pride.

Highlights of “Bhasha Gaurav Saptah” include a blend of online and offline programs designed to engage citizens of all ages. A special booklet tracing the history of the Assamese language back to the 4th century will be unveiled, showcasing the evolution and contributions of scholars and writers who have enriched Assamese literature and language.

Educational institutions, cultural organizations, and local communities are set to participate, underscoring a collective commitment to linguistic preservation.

The initiative follows Chief Minister Sarma’s October 16 announcement of the celebration, aimed at building public awareness around Assamese’s classical language status and strengthening bonds between Assam’s diverse linguistic communities.

“Bhasha Gaurav Saptah” not only celebrates Assamese but also promotes respect for all regional languages, reinforcing Assam’s dedication to linguistic diversity as a cornerstone of its cultural identity.
