Assam Launches Innovative Fish Powder Program to Combat Child Malnutrition
Guwahati, 16th August: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative in Kamrup district aimed at tackling child malnutrition through the innovative use of fish powder. Under the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana, the district has rolled out the Matsya Paripushti program, which empowers local fish farmers to produce nutrient-rich fish powder and integrate it into children’s diets.
This pilot project focuses on enhancing dietary diversity for children aged 3 to 10 years by incorporating fish powder into meals served at Anganwadi Centers and Lower Primary Schools. The program, which involved 55 Anganwadi Centers and 43 Lower Primary Schools, successfully reached approximately 3,300 children, yielding significant improvements in their nutritional status.
Key outcomes of the initiative include:
- A 3.63% reduction in severely stunted children.
- A 5.46% reduction in underweight children.
- A 1.67% reduction in severely underweight children.
- An increase in the average BMI from 15.54 to 16.11.
- An average weight gain from 23.83 kg to 25.12 kg.
- An average height gain from 122.83 cm to 123.95 cm.
“This pioneering effort not only addresses malnutrition but also supports local fish farmers, creating a sustainable model for nutritional improvement,” said Chief Minister Sarma, emphasizing the dual benefits of enhancing child health and bolstering the local economy.
As the program continues to show promise, it is poised to be expanded across other districts in Assam, setting a new standard for combating malnutrition in the region.
