Assam Law Enforcement Tightens Grip on Pro-Pakistan Sentiments Following Pahalgam Attack
The arrest of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam has been confirmed and justified by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, citing the MLA’s alleged pro-Pakistan remarks. The Chief Minister has made it clear that the state will not tolerate any support or defense of Pakistan, particularly in connection with the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister Sarma stated, “Several people have been arrested so far. That is why he (Aminul Islam) is in prison. I will do this again. I will take action against such people.” This statement underscores the state government’s firm stance against any perceived anti-national sentiment.
A local court in Nagaon district has remanded AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam to four days of police custody after he was presented before the court. The arrest follows the circulation of a video on social media where Islam allegedly made statements defending the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack. Nagaon SP Swapnaneel Deka confirmed that the police took cognizance of the video and registered a case against the MLA.
The Assam Chief Minister has also provided detailed information regarding other arrests made in connection with pro-Pakistan statements. In a series of posts on X, Sarma listed individuals arrested from various districts, including Hailakandi, Silchar, Morigaon, Nagaon, and Sivasagar. The arrested individuals were accused of directly or indirectly promoting the cause of Pakistan on social media.
Further expanding the scope of the arrests, the Assam Police have apprehended two additional individuals: Md. Jarif Ali, also known as Sharif Sing, from Barpeta, and Anil Bania, District Secretary of the Satra Mukti Sangram Parishad from Biswanath. These arrests reflect an intensified crackdown on individuals expressing anti-national sentiments.
Aminul Islam has been booked under sections 152/196/197(1)/113(3)/352/353 of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita (BNS), as confirmed by an official ‘X’ post from Assam Police. This legal action highlights the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the alleged offenses.
