
Assam Leaders Pay Tribute to Former PM Manmohan Singh, a Visionary Economist and Statesman
Assam: Political leaders across Assam mourned the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away at AIIMS Delhi at the age of 92. Widely recognized as the architect of India’s economic liberalization, Singh’s death has left a deep void in Indian politics and economic leadership.
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya expressed profound grief, calling Singh a leader who elevated India’s global economic standing. “His gentleness, decency, and his role in strengthening the Indian economy will always be remembered. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, reflecting on his close association with Singh during his time in the Congress, shared a heartfelt message on X. “Dr. Sahab embodied humility and simplicity while demonstrating immense intellectual prowess. His contributions to shaping India’s free-market economy will forever be a guiding light,” Sarma wrote.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal described Singh as a leader of unparalleled humility and scholarship. “He played a key role in India’s economic resurgence, and his passing leaves a significant void,” Sonowal remarked.
The Assam Congress hailed Singh as a visionary economist and a leader of unwavering integrity. In a statement, the party said, “India has lost one of its finest sons. His contributions to the nation’s progress will be remembered for generations.”
Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. The BJP’s Assam unit highlighted Singh’s role in abolishing the license raj and spearheading India’s economic liberalization, which transformed the nation’s growth trajectory. Leaders from Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad also praised his far-reaching economic reforms and dedication to public service.
For Assam, Singh held a special place, having represented the state in the Rajya Sabha for 28 years. His bond with the state and its people was deeply cherished, and his passing marks the end of an era in India’s political and economic history.
