Guwahati: In a landmark moment for the Northeast and a major stride towards a digitally empowered India, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) have joined hands to set up the country’s first 5G Captive Non-Public Network in the refinery sector. This groundbreaking MoU, signed at a workshop in Guwahati, is poised to usher in a new era of high-tech industrial operations, not just in Assam but across the nation.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma proudly announced the development on social media platform X, calling it a “proud moment for Assam.” His post highlighted the transformative potential of this partnership, stating it is a “big leap for #DigitalAssam & #AtmanirbharBharat” that will introduce cutting-edge technologies like IoT, AR/VR, and Big Data into the state’s industrial future.

This bespoke 5G network will act as a dedicated, secure, and ultra-reliable connectivity backbone for NRL, enabling real-time monitoring, advanced automation, and seamless data processing. Officials from both public sector enterprises believe this pilot project will be a game-changer, serving as a blueprint for other industries nationwide to adopt similar technologies. The initiative perfectly aligns with the government’s vision of a self-reliant and digitally enabled industrial ecosystem.

The collaboration is a shining example of the government’s “Whole of Government” approach, lauded by the Secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises. This strategic move is not just a technological upgrade for the refinery, but a significant step towards modernising India’s industrial base, creating new employment opportunities, and fostering advanced skill development, particularly in the North Eastern region. It is a moment of pride for Assam, showcasing its readiness to be a frontrunner in India’s journey towards high-tech industrialization.
