Assam Legislative Assembly’s Budget Session: Key Takeaways from Day 1

Guwahati: Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog stated on Friday that the budget for the fiscal year 2023–2024 gives special attention to the education department.

The finance minister stated that the budget will be executed with the welfare of the people in mind and will give the people optimism after today’s budget session.

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Legislator Karim Uddin Barbhuiya argued that hosting an all-party gathering is pointless unless Congress is free of the BJP.

On the other hand, BJP chief Bhabesh Kalita stated that the combination of the opposition parties has been welcomed by the government.

“I welcome the decision of opposition parties coming together against the BJP. Bhupen Borah can keep on criticizing us while we will continue our developmental works. I am confident that people will vote for development,” Kalita said.

BJP MLA Diganta Kalita attacked the Congress, claiming that it is no longer relevant and lacks the resources to run in any elections.

Kalita said, “Under the leadership of Bhupen Bora, Congress has lost at least eight elections. We can guarantee that there are no candidates in the party to contest in Panchayat elections.”

“Congress is feeling proud by only winning seats in few constituencies in Barpeta and Dhubri,” he added.

However, Kalita claimed that the topic of dog meat was not particularly crucial.

Asom Gana Parishad MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita commented on the state government’s decision on Deepor Beel and claimed that after years of struggling for the matter, he had finally been successful.

He said, “The previous Chief Ministers had paid attention to the issue however, did not implement anything. But the present Chief Minister has paid attention to it as well as implemented action.”

Gana Suraksha Party MLA Naba Sarania responded to the Sarania Kachari tribe losing its tribal designation.

Welcoming the verdict of Gauhati High Court, he said, “I hope the Assam government will take the issue seriously and bring it as a bill in the upcoming session in talks with the Central Government to give tribal status to the Sarania Kachari tribe constitutionally or else the political future of our tribe will be under uncertainty.”

“Several political conspiracies are being planned against me, however, they cannot harm a hair on my head,” he added.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Terash Gowalla received insults for carrying a bicycle to the Legislature. The Legislator was allegedly abused by Assam Police at the secretariat’s front entrance.

The cops further coerced him into dismounting his bike and interrogated him about his whereabouts and motives for attempting to enter the secretariat.

The MLA complained in written to the Assembly Speaker that he had been insulted.

Gowalla said, “Despite being a two-time representative, I have been insulted in the premises of Assam Secretariat. I am feeling insecure after this incident.”

The Lawmaker has allegedly been subjected to mental harassment by the Assam Police.
