Assam: Leopard Posing a Threat in Jorhat Dies from Injuries
Guwahati: The leopard that posed a threat to the people in Jorhat Assam passed away on Thursday while receiving medical attention in Kaziranga.
After being tranquillized following a 24-hour search in Chenijan, the leopard was reportedly receiving care at the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) in Kaziranga.
However, he passed away from his wounds early today.
The leopard was captured last Tuesday as a result of the forest department’s persistent efforts.
The search has been ongoing, according to the forest officials, since Monday morning at 10 am. Within a quarter, they had the leopard tranquillized and in their possession.
The leopard was receiving treatment since he was hurt while being put to sleep.
It should be noted that when the leopard terrorised a neighbourhood on Monday, at least 15 people were hurt, including three members of the forest service.
The incident took place close to Chenijan’s Rain Forest Research Institute.
In the Sotai section of the district, the enraged leopard initially attacked a family consisting of a father, mother, and their two children.
After learning of the situation, the forest officials hurried to the area armed with rifles and firecrackers to drive the leopard out of the neighbourhood. They reported that two forest officials had been hurt during the incident.
According to Mohan Lal Meena, the superintendent of police for the Jorhat district, 13 people were hurt in the attack, including three members of the forest service.
“All the injured were admitted to a local hospital. They are said to be out of danger,” the SP said.
