Guwahati: BJP leader Dilip Saikia on Thursday said that Bir Lachit Borphukan is one of the greatest Assamese heroes. He represents the valour, fortitude, and intelligence that characterise Assamese self-identity.

The Mangaldoi Lok Sabha MP urged during a speech that the NCERT and CBSE textbooks add a chapter on the Ahom army general Lachit Borphukan.

The Minister said , “People don’t know about the Assamese as a community in many parts of India, but our government, should undertake serious efforts to include Ahoms and the valour and patriotism of a military genius like Lachit in the national curriculum.”

The Minister also suggested that a chapter on Lachit Borphukon be included to the curricula of the colleges and schools in their respective fields.

He claimed that Lachit Borphukan’s brave leadership resulted in the Mughals’ resounding loss in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, giving him a special place in Assam history.

He continued, “However, his accomplishments are still virtually obscure in most other sections of the country.”

He continued, “Lachit Barphukan, who is frequently referred to be the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj of Northeast India, rarely emerges in our public debate; therefore, inclusion of Borphukan’s history and bravery in the curriculum is imperative at this time.”

The Minister stated that Lachit Diwas is observed annually on November 24 to honour Lachit Borphukan’s bravery and the Assamese army’s victory at the Battle of Saraighat. The “Lachit Borphukan Gold Medal,” established in 1999, is given to the top cadet from the National Defense Academy in an effort to encourage military people to model the bravery and sacrifices of Borphukan.

Its needs to be noted that, Borphukan led his troops from the front at the battle of Saraighat in 1671, leading them to a resounding victory in spite of being severely ill. His unwavering bravery and tenacity made sure that the north-eastern region’s culture, identity, and distinctiveness were preserved.
