Assam Lower Court Remands Government Officials in Police Custody over Bribery Charges

Guwahati, 24th July: A lower court in Assam made a significant decision on Monday, remanding two government officials of Dhubri Zilla Parishad in four-day police custody. The officials facing charges of bribery have been identified as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Biswajit Goswami and Assistant District Programme Manager Mrinal Kanti Sarkar.

Earlier today, the accused officials were presented before a special court by the anti-corruption cell, which sought their custody for four days to conduct further investigations.

The arrests occurred after a shocking incident last Friday when the duo was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs. 30,000 from members of the parishad. The bribe was offered in exchange for approving developmental projects under government schemes.

Following that, the CEO of Dhubri Zila Parishad, Biswajit Goswami, had about Rs. 2 crores of unaccounted cash taken from his home by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC). During the search, a considerable sum worth Rs. 2,32,85,300 (two crores thirty-two lakhs eighty-five thousand and 300) was found.

Furthermore, the vigilance cell’s sleuths carried out a search of Biswajit Goswami’s wife’s residence in Bongaigaon, where they recovered the hefty sum of unaccounted cash.

This incident has sent shockwaves through the region, and the authorities are determined to conduct a thorough investigation to bring transparency and accountability to the administration.
