Assam: Major Drug Seizures by Karimganj and Cachar Police; Crackdown on Illegal Trafficking
Guwahati, 17th May: In a significant crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, Karimganj police intercepted a container truck at the Chudaibari checkpoint near the Assam-Tripura border, uncovering a massive stash of banned cough syrup. Valued at crores of rupees in the international market, the seizure underscores law enforcement’s ongoing battle against narcotics.
Acting on a tip-off, authorities meticulously searched the truck bearing registration number NL/01/AC/0700, en route from Delhi to Tripura. Concealed within 16 cartons, police unearthed 1,600 bottles of banned cough syrup, identified as ‘Phensedyl’. The detained individual, Jayanta Dev, believed to be the operation’s mastermind, is from Tripura, raising suspicions of a broader smuggling network spanning state borders.
This interception follows a recent success by Karimganj Police in seizing 1.2 kilograms of heroin worth Rs 10 crore in the market. Acting on secret information, police established a checkpoint at the Dharmanagar Basti area under the Badarpur police station, intercepting a truck from Aizawl, Mizoram. The haul, hidden in the front seat, led to the apprehension of Siabuddin, with investigations ongoing.
Similarly, Assam Police in Cachar district seized 1.2 kg of heroin valued at Rs 7 crore in two separate operations. In Dholai, based on intelligence input, police recovered 55 soap cases containing heroin. Subsequently, in Silchar, another 45 soap cases were confiscated, highlighting the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in the region.
