Assam: Man Arrested for Allegedly Drowning Mother in Hailakandi
Guwahati: A 22-year-old college student was taken into custody on Sunday morning in Hailakandi district’s Lala area, accused of drowning his 55-year-old mother in a pond following a heated family argument. The tragic incident, which police describe as a domestic dispute gone horribly wrong, has sent shockwaves through the Umednagar locality.
The accused, Mimdeep Nath, allegedly killed his mother, Manju Rani Nath, around 8:30 AM near their home on SP Road in Ward No. 3. The victim’s brother, Tapan Nath, filed a complaint stating that the argument between mother and son escalated violently, with Mimdeep reportedly dragging Manju Rani from their residence to a nearby pond on the property. Eyewitnesses claim he forcibly held her underwater until she drowned.
Local residents, alerted by the commotion, rushed to the scene and managed to pull Manju Rani from the pond. She was immediately transported to Lala Primary Health Centre, but sadly, medical staff pronounced her dead upon arrival.
Lala Police swiftly responded to the complaint and arrested Mimdeep Nath at the site of the incident. Manju Rani Nath’s body has since been sent to SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi for a post-mortem examination.
The family had recently endured another tragedy, with Manju Rani’s husband, Mannik Nath, a police constable in Hailakandi, passing away a few months prior. Mimdeep was the couple’s eldest child. Authorities have registered a case based on Tapan Nath’s complaint and initiated a full investigation into the matter.
