
Assam: Man Arrested for Cow Slaughter During Akika Ceremony
Guwahati, Assam, July 28, 2024 — Assam Police have arrested Abdur Rafiq, a resident of Netaji Nagar in Kharupetia, for allegedly slaughtering a cow during a child’s Akika ceremony, a practice in adherence to Islamic traditions.
Rafiq’s family stated that the slaughter took place within their walled property. However, local Hindu residents reported the incident to the police, resulting in a raid on Rafiq’s residence. During the raid, police seized the beef and arrested Abdur Rafiq.
The situation has intensified as seven Hindu organizations have filed formal complaints against Rafiq at the Kharupetia police station. Authorities have sent the seized beef for examination by veterinary doctors and are conducting a thorough investigation.
The incident has stirred strong reactions within the community, highlighting ongoing tensions surrounding religious practices and animal slaughter. Abdur Rafiq remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
