Guwahati: A man was assaulted by a group of people in the Cachar district of Assam on suspicion of kidnapping children, police informed on Wednesday.
Reports state that the mob savagely beat him and burned his car ablaze because they thought he was a kidnapper.
Speaking on the incident, SP Numal Mahatta said, “Some people attacked a person and put a vehicle on fire. Police saved the man, who had suffered significant injuries, and took him right away to the hospital. We have filed a case in relation to the incident that happened today, and we will punish those responsible severely.”
Further warnings from the police advised citizens to ignore any such rumours.
“I kindly ask all Cachar district residents not to trust any rumours. We will take action if they discover anyone who is distributing false information or if they discover someone they suspect. Don’t try to enforce the law yourself, he added.
Meanwhile, further investigation in the matter is underway.
