Assam: Man Critically Injured During Moh-Juj in Morigaon
Guwahati, 19th January: A person sustained critical injuries during a ‘Moh-juj’ or buffalo fight in Morigaon district of Assam.
The incident took place in Lahorighat during the traditional moh-juj event on Friday.
The injured individual has been identified as Sarat Chandra Nath, as per local sources.
Sarat Chandra Nath was an employee of the Dhing Market Committee, and this information was shared by the local community.
Notably, the Assam government recently granted approval for traditional buffalo fights, particularly during Magh Bihu, under the condition that they adhere to specific standard operating procedures (SOPs).
The state government, in a cabinet meeting held in December 2023, gave “in-principle approval to the issue of detailed procedure/SOP for permitting traditional buffalo and bull fights to be organised during Magh Bihu at Ahatguri in Morigaon district, Nagaon district, or in any other part of Assam.” This incident highlights the potential risks associated with the revival of such traditional practices.
