Assam: Man Fighting Citizenship Case Dies By Suicide
Guwahati: A 60-year-old man allegedly committed suicide who was fighting a case at a Foreigners Tribunal despite his name appearing in the National Register for Citizens (NRC) in Morigaon district of Assam.
The deceased identified as Manik Das is a resident of Borkhal village near Jagi Raod of the district. He was survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. He used to run a small business at the Jagi road dry-fish market.
According to reports, Das had been missing since Sunday and his body was recovered hanging from a tree on a hilltop near his home on Tuesday evening.
According to his family, he committed suicide due to frustration and mental torture.
The family further alleged that he was going through depression due to the case against him at the Foreigners’ Tribunal-2 in Morigaon.
The minor daughter of Das said that their family is not sure why the authorities served him with notice and filed a case against him as NRC listed his father’s name.
He has all genuine legal identity documents in his name, including a PAN card, Aadhaar card, and land records, she added.
However, the case against Das was filed in 2004 with the Tribunal.
