Assam: Man Killed in Rhino Attack Near Kaziranga National Park

Guwahati: A 56-year-old man, Vikram Lohar, tragically lost his life after being attacked by a rhinoceros near Hatikhuli Haldibari in Kaziranga on Monday morning.

The incident occurred on National Highway 37, where the rhinoceros had wandered out of the forested area of Kaziranga National Park. Lohar, who was on his routine morning walk, encountered the animal and sustained critical injuries during the attack.

He was immediately rushed to the Shaheed Kamala Miri Sub-Divisional Civil Hospital in Bokakhat for emergency medical attention. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, Lohar succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

This unfortunate incident has intensified concerns about the increasing frequency of wildlife straying into human-inhabited areas near the national park. The region, known for its rich biodiversity and dense rhino population, has seen a rise in human-wildlife conflicts in recent years.

Local residents have called on authorities to implement stronger measures to mitigate such encounters, emphasizing the need for enhanced surveillance and barriers to prevent wildlife from venturing onto highways and into villages. Authorities have assured the public of taking steps to address these issues while balancing conservation efforts with human safety.
