Guwahati: In a horrific incident at the Powai Tea Garden in Assam’s Digboi, a man in an intoxicated state killed his 13-year-old niece with an axe during Durga Puja festivities.
The victim’s uncle, identified as Mithun Bhumij, allegedly attacked her in a drunken frenzy, fatally wounding her around the neck.
The incident occurred amidst celebrations in the estate’s line number 3, where workers had been enjoying their festival bonuses.
Rampant alcohol consumption during the festivities has been blamed for the tragedy.
Mithun Bhumij was arrested on the spot by a team from the Digboi police station.
The young girl’s body was held at the police station overnight before being sent to Tinsukia for a post-mortem the following day.
The murder has shocked the local community, sparking outrage over the growing alcohol problem in tea garden areas.
Many residents have called for stricter regulations on liquor sales, particularly during festivals, to prevent further tragedies like this.
