Assam: Massive Drug Seizures in Cachar as Police Bust Inter-State Narcotics Ring
Guwahati: Cachar Police have made a significant dent in the region’s drug trade, apprehending three individuals from Darrang district and seizing a substantial quantity of heroin. The bust, which took place on August 24, resulted in the confiscation of heroin valued at over ₹41 lakh. The accused, identified as Ubir Ali (30), Rajak Ali (26), and Moiz Ali (30), were caught while travelling in an auto-rickshaw.
According to Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta, the operation was a result of specific intelligence. Officers intercepted the suspects and recovered 83 grams of heroin. The substance was confirmed as heroin by a drug detection kit and the entire process was conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, ensuring proper protocol.
This latest success follows a series of recent crackdowns. On the night of August 23, Sribhumi police intercepted a consignment of 20,000 Yaba tablets, with a street value of more than ₹3 crore, leading to the arrest of two individuals.
Earlier in the month, Cachar police had conducted two separate raids at Sonabarighat and Hmarkhawlen, recovering 216 grams of heroin and 20,000 Yaba tablets. These operations resulted in the arrest of five people, including two women, and the seizure of two vehicles used for transporting the drugs. The combined value of the contraband in those raids was estimated at nearly ₹7 crore.
SP Mahatta stated that the ongoing investigations are aimed at unearthing the larger network behind these drug consignments, stressing the police’s relentless commitment to making Assam a drug-free state. He reiterated that all seizures were carried out with witnesses present and confirmed with drug detection kits, maintaining transparency and adhering to legal procedures.
