Assam: Massive Reactor Begins 3,000-Kilometer Journey to Numaligarh Refinery as Part of Expansion Efforts

Guwahati, 20th August: A 32-metre-long Vacuum Gas Oil (VGO) Hydrotreating Reactor has embarked on an extensive journey from Gujarat to the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam, covering a distance of approximately 3,000 kilometers. This significant piece of equipment is crucial to the refinery’s ongoing expansion project, aimed at enhancing its processing capabilities.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, highlighted the reactor’s transport in a recent tweet, linking it to India’s broader strategy to increase domestic energy production and reduce dependency on imports.

This latest shipment follows a challenging period earlier this year, where four cargo vessels carrying essential machinery for the refinery were stranded in the Brahmaputra River for nearly two months due to low water levels in the Dhansiri River. The vessels, which had set sail from Kolkata, were forced to halt at Shilghat in Kaliabor.

To overcome this logistical hurdle, authorities devised a plan to excavate the Dhansiri riverbed, allowing the machinery to be transferred from the stranded vessels to the refinery. The successful execution of this plan has paved the way for the continued delivery of vital equipment, ensuring the progress of the Numaligarh Refinery’s expansion project.
