Northeast Desk, 5th July: In a daring rescue operation amidst flood-ravaged conditions in Morigaon, a medical team faced an urgent situation when 25-year-old Jahanara Khatoon unexpectedly went into labor while being evacuated from a flood-hit char (sandbar). Driven by the pressing need, healthcare professionals swiftly converted their boat into a makeshift delivery room, using a tarpaulin cover to shield Khatoon and themselves from the relentless rain.
Dr. P.C. Pator, the sub-divisional medical officer of Jhargaon, who led the operation, expressed relief and satisfaction, stating, “It is so satisfying that we could complete the delivery. The mother and the baby are absolutely fine at Jhargaon block PHC.” Despite the challenging conditions amidst the raging waters of the Brahmaputra River, the team successfully delivered a healthy baby.
Dr. Pator disclosed that the newborn has a congenital defect, and further examinations are pending to determine the baby’s sex. Nonetheless, he assured that both Khatoon and the baby are in good health. The medical team, amidst navigating dangerous river currents daily, continues to evacuate expectant mothers, children, and senior citizens from isolated river islands while providing critical medical care.
“On Wednesday, during our rounds to five chars, we encountered Jahanara Khatoon, who was expecting her third child in August. Upon examination, we realized immediate hospitalization was necessary. We transported her onto the boat, and that’s when she went into labor,” recounted Dr. Pator.
Following this extraordinary delivery, Dr. Pator and his team remained steadfast in their mission, successfully evacuating another pregnant woman from a different char on Thursday. “She is expecting soon,” he confirmed, highlighting the ongoing commitment to serving flood-affected communities amidst challenging conditions.
