Assam Minister: Arrangements Made To Protect Animals During Floods

Guwahati: The Assam Forest Department has taken all necessary preparations in the state’s national parks and wildlife sanctuaries to protect wild animals during floods, forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya said.

He said that the forest department, national park officials, and wildlife sanctuaries had taken the necessary preparations to address the food deficit and preserve wild animals.

“Every year, we have taken steps to prevent flooding and have prioritised the rescue of wild animals. During floods, we always endeavour to save all animals in national parks and wildlife refuges. We’ve done all the preparations for it again this year “Suklabaidya said.

He also stated that his agency has created a routine list for forest personnel and labourers on how they will perform their duties during floods.

“We will implement a time card system for all motorists to limit speed on routes that pass through national parks and animal refuges. Our national parks and sanctuaries have enough highlands. For Kaziranga National Park, we have also organised rescue squads ” the Assam’s Forest Minister said.

So far, 25 people have died and 33 districts have been damaged by floods and landslides caused by severe rain in the state.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s (ASDMA) data, 19 people died in floods and five people died in landslides.

The flood of this year displaced about 9.66 lakh people, ASMDA said.
