Assam Minister Hazarika Announces Swift Embankment Reconstruction Amid Escalating Flood Crisis
Guwahati, 2nd July: Assam’s Minister of Water Resources, Pijush Hazarika, has pledged to commence the reconstruction of the broken embankment in Bankuwal and Golaghat within three days. Assuring expedited efforts, Hazarika emphasized the use of advanced technologies to hasten the process, aiming for completion within 15 days.
The embankment, critically damaged during the recent monsoon floods, has severely disrupted the lives of villagers in the affected areas.
Acknowledging the widespread impact of the ongoing floods across 14 districts, affecting over 2,70,628 residents, Hazarika underscored the urgency of providing immediate relief to those affected. Reports indicate that Assam has experienced an average rainfall of 21.6 mm, exacerbating the crisis.
Flood warnings have been issued across 41 revenue circles and 698 villages in the state. Major rivers such as the Brahmaputra at Dibrugarh, Nimatighat (Jorhat), Tezpur, Subansiri at Badatighat (Lakhimpur), Dikhow at Sivasagar, Dichang at Nanglamuraghat (Sivasagar), and Beki at Barpeta Road Bridge are flowing above the danger mark.
Tragically, two fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours in Dhemaji district due to the floods.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, reaffirming the state’s commitment, has assured continuous monitoring of the flood situation, particularly in Dibrugarh where thirteen fishermen have been stranded on a riverine islet since June 28.
