Assam: Minor elopes with lover in Tezpur, detained

Guwahati, 6th March: Despite the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s strong stance against child marriage and ongoing efforts to enact laws to prevent such practices, a recent case of child marriage unfolded in Tezpur, underscoring persistent challenges.

The incident involved a 15-year-old girl from Sukra Dahanga in Tezpur Salmara Rupkuria who eloped and got married on March 3. However, prompt action by the police led to the rescue of the minor girl and the apprehension of a young man involved in the incident.

While Assam’s Chief Minister has been actively working to combat child marriage and stressing the need to protect young individuals from such practices, this case in Tezpur serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle to eradicate child marriages completely.

It highlights the collective responsibility to safeguard the well-being and future of young individuals, emphasizing the importance of concerted efforts to ensure they are protected from harmful practices like child marriage.
