Assam: Missing VVPAT Machine Raises Concern in Udalguri District

Guwahati, 29th March: In a concerning development, authorities in Udalguri district have reported the absence of a VVPAT machine bearing the unique ID EVTEB96784 during the segregation process of machines Assembly segment-wise after the initial randomization. According to distribution schedules, 267 machines were allocated to Bhergaon, among which one is currently unaccounted for.

A preliminary inquiry conducted by the Joint Chief Electoral Officer deputed from the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer Assam revealed that after the First Level Checking of EVMs and VVPATs, the machines deemed FLC-ok were securely stored in the strong room under double lock, with the presence of representatives from recognized political parties. The strong room is under constant CCTV surveillance and armed security, ensuring stringent storage and security protocols with political party participation at every stage.

CEO Assam stated in a press release that the missing VVPAT may have been inadvertently shifted to the ECIL factory along with non-functional units after the completion of the First Level Checking. As a result, the matter has been brought to the attention of ECIL for further investigation.

Assurances were given that strict action would be taken against any dereliction of duty found on the part of concerned district officials, ensuring accountability in addressing the issue and maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
