Assam: MLA Akhil Gogoi Condemns Attacks on Congress Leaders, Calls for CM Sarma’s Resignation

Guwahati, 22nd January: Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, on January 22, strongly condemned the assault and vandalism incidents targeting Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, and Bhupen Borah during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam’s Sonitpur.

Leading the United Opposition Forum, Akhil Gogoi expressed vehement condemnation for the attacks, emphasizing that these incidents painted a shameful picture of Assam. During a press conference, he called for Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s resignation, holding him responsible for the lack of law and order during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Akhil Gogoi argued that even if the attacks occurred without CM Sarma’s knowledge, he remained accountable for the failure to maintain law and order. Describing the Assam government as a “Hitler government,” Gogoi highlighted the absence of security for the public and declared the situation as akin to an undeclared emergency. Demanding CM Sarma’s resignation, Gogoi criticized the government’s failure to ensure public safety and uphold law and order in the state.

This comes after the alleged assault on Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah and the targeting of Jairam Ramesh’s car during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, prompting the Congress party to demand a judicial inquiry into the incident, citing the involvement of a BJP MLA and supporters.
