Assam: Morigaon Police Apprehend Foreigner Declared Absconder

Assam: The Morigaon police have successfully detained a 65-year-old foreign national, Maqbool Hussain, after years of evading authorities.

Hussain had been declared a foreigner by the Foreigners Tribunal in 2015 in case number 24/15, but had been absconding since then.

A night raid conducted on January 3rd finally led to his apprehension. Hussain had been actively sought by the police following the tribunal’s ruling, which had classified him as an absconder.

Earlier this month, on September 2024, 28 individuals declared as foreigners by the Foreigners Tribunal in Barpeta, Assam, were transferred to a detention camp in Goalpara.

The group, consisting of 9 women and 19 men, was escorted under heavy security amidst heightened emotions at the Barpeta Superintendent of Police’s office.

This action followed a lengthy legal process where the Foreigners Tribunal in Barpeta determined their status as foreigners. The Barpeta police spearheaded the operation, leading to the relocation of these individuals from various parts of the district to the detention camp in Matia, Goalpara district.
