Assam: Morphine weighing 1.910 kg seized by Karbi Anglong police, two arrested

Guwahati, 20th December: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Assam Police have achieved substantial success in Lahorijan with the seizure of morphine. In a late-night operation, the Karbi Anglong police intercepted a bus at Lahorijan, recovering 2 packets of morphine weighing 1.910 kg after a thorough search. Two individuals from a neighboring state were apprehended in connection with this incident.

Throughout 2023, the Assam Police have consistently made significant seizures of narcotics, reflecting the gravity of the drug problem and the robustness of the police response. The total estimated street value of the confiscated drugs stands at a staggering Rs 718 crore. Assam police reported seizing 164 kg of heroin, 35,04119 Meth Tablets, 162 kg of opium, 29,114 kg of ganja, and 58,5492 bottles of cough syrup in 2023.

The year 2023 saw the arrest of 4,719 drug traffickers, and 2,852 cases of drug trafficking were registered. Various operations contributed to these noteworthy results, including an operation in Karbi Anglong district where heroin worth more than Rs 5 crore was seized. This operation involved intercepting a vehicle from Manipur, leading to the discovery of 50 soap boxes containing 637.28 grams of heroin.

Commending the police for their successful operation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the diligence and effectiveness of the law enforcement efforts in combating drug trafficking in Assam.
