Assam: MP Naba Sarania Faces Setback as Tribal Certificate Cancelled Amid Allegations of Forgery
Guwahati, 8th February: Trouble brews for MP Naba Sarania as his tribal certificate gets revoked ahead of the Lok Sabha elections following investigations into allegations of forging his caste certificate to contest elections on an ST seat.
Sarania, a two-time MP, came under scrutiny for allegedly using fake certificates, raising questions about his tribal identity. It has been alleged that Sarania falsely claimed affiliation with the Bodo/Bodo-Kachari tribe, contrary to his actual heritage, which came to light after an application was submitted to the state-level monitoring committee.
The complaint against Sarania was lodged by Janaklal Basumatary, a social activist from Kokrajhar, triggering the investigation. The certificate in question, issued by the Tamulpur unit of the All Assam Tribal Association, is alleged to have been forged.
However, it is alleged that Sarania’s tribal certificate was fabricated, rendering him ineligible to contest the upcoming elections from Kokrajhar, which is designated as an ST seat.
This development deals a significant blow to Sarania’s political prospects and raises questions about the authenticity of caste certificates in electoral processes. Sarania’s disqualification underscores the need for stringent scrutiny and verification procedures to ensure the integrity of elections and uphold the principles of fair representation.
