Assam: Mysterious Death of Kaziranga National Park’s Iconic Elephant ‘Lakhimala’ Sparks Controversy

Guwahati, 23rd April: The Kaziranga National Park in Assam was shrouded in sadness as news of the mysterious demise of ‘Lakhimala,’ a beloved elephant employed for tourist safaris, reverberated through the region.

‘Lakhimala’ was not just any tusker; it was a cherished symbol of the safari experience at the Bagori range within the park, captivating visitors with its majestic presence. However, its sudden passing has left both tourists and locals in shock and mourning.

According to reports from its mahaut, the elephant had been ailing for an extended period, exhibiting signs of illness such as difficulty in eating and drinking. Despite efforts to provide care and treatment, the tusker’s condition continued to deteriorate, ultimately leading to its demise.

However, allegations of a cover-up have emerged, casting a shadow of suspicion over the circumstances surrounding the elephant’s death. Some claim that both the elephant’s owner and park authorities attempted to conceal details about the incident, even going so far as to clandestinely transport the carcass out of the park under the cover of night via truck.

The purported secrecy surrounding the elephant’s death has ignited controversy and raised questions about transparency and accountability within the park management. As locals pay their respects to ‘Lakhimala’ by offering flowers and ‘gamusa,’ a traditional Assamese cloth, the community demands answers and justice for the beloved creature.

Amidst mounting public scrutiny, authorities have launched further inquiries into the matter, pledging to unravel the truth behind ‘Lakhimala’s’ untimely demise. As investigations unfold, the legacy of the iconic elephant serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between wildlife conservation and ethical stewardship within India’s national parks.
