Assam: Mystery Surrounds Death of Elderly Woman in Guwahati, Son Faces Scrutiny

Guwahati — The skeletal remains of Purnima Devi, an elderly woman, were discovered in her home in Jyotikuchi on October 20. Reports suggest that the body had been in the residence for several days, raising concerns about the mental well-being of her son, Joydeep Dey, who lived with her.

Neighbors became alarmed when they were unable to reach Purnima and sought help from her relatives. Upon learning about the situation, relatives attempted to visit the home but were refused entry by Joydeep. This prompted them to alert local authorities, who subsequently arrived at the scene and made the grim discovery.

According to local reports, Joydeep had shown no prior signs of mental illness. However, since the death of his father three years ago, he had become increasingly withdrawn and had limited his interactions with others. Neighbors indicated that he discouraged his mother from socializing, contributing to their isolation.

Purnima was reportedly living off her late husband’s railway pension, but the exact circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear. Authorities are conducting a forensic investigation to determine the cause of death and the timeline of events leading up to the discovery of her remains.

The incident has raised serious questions about the dynamics of the mother-son relationship and the mental health issues that may have arisen following the loss of family members. As investigations continue, the local community is left to grapple with the shocking circumstances surrounding this tragic case.
