Assam: NCORD Launches Major Raid Against Illegal Tobacco Sales in Dhubri

Guwahati, August 31, 2024 — The Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) executed a significant operation in Dhubri town today, targeting the illegal sale of gutkha, tobacco, and cigarettes. Led by Dr. Natyabir Das, NCORD’s Nodal Officer, the raid aimed to clamp down on the unregulated distribution of these harmful products, enforcing minimum fines on offenders.

Dr. Das highlighted the raid’s critical role in protecting public health, emphasizing the rising concerns over the availability of these substances. “This crackdown is a necessary measure to address the illegal trade and safeguard our community,” he stated.

The operation, however, has sparked controversy among local small shop vendors. Many vendors, who rely on the sale of these products for their livelihood, have expressed frustration over the raid. They argue that the focus on small retailers is unfair, as larger wholesalers and distributors—who supply the products—remain unaddressed.

Vendors have called for a more targeted approach, suggesting that cracking down on major suppliers would be more effective in disrupting the illegal trade. Their concerns reflect the complexities involved in enforcing such bans and the need for a comprehensive strategy to tackle the issue.
