Assam: NDA Allies Hold Key Meeting in Chirang to Strategize for Sidli and Bongaigaon Bypolls
Guwahati, 18th September: A pivotal meeting of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies took place at the BRG Refinery in Dhaligaon, Chirang, to discuss strategies for the upcoming bypolls in Sidli and Bongaigaon assembly constituencies. The session saw the participation of key political figures, including Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Ashok Singhal, and Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief Pramod Boro. Also present were top leaders from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to the electoral agreements established in 2021, focusing on mutual cooperation to ensure success in the bypolls. Chief Minister Sarma voiced his support for a strategic alliance between the UPPL and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) as they prepare for the 2025 Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, emphasizing the importance of unity in strengthening regional politics.
Addressing broader concerns, Chief Minister Sarma responded to statements made by the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) regarding the safety of Muslims in Assam. He reassured the public that the region remains secure, dismissing fears of rising criminal activities. Sarma also clarified that the eviction issue in Sonapur relates to the tribal belt and should not be misinterpreted as a threat to overall safety.
Highlighting Assam’s evolving political landscape, Sarma observed that free speech is thriving, noting that recent protests and criticisms directed at him are evidence of greater democratic freedoms. He stressed, “If there was no safety, then anyone speaking against me would have definitely been arrested,” underlining his administration’s commitment to protecting civil liberties.
