Assam: NEMSU President Demands Stern Action After Attack on Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain

Guwahati: The North-East Minorities Students’ Union (NEMSU) has strongly condemned the recent attack on Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain, his son, and his security personnel in Assam’s Nagaon district.

NEMSU President Badrul Islam called for immediate and strict action against those responsible, stating that the attackers should be dealt with firmly and shown no leniency.

Questioning the law and order situation under the current administration, he expressed concern over public safety, remarking that if an elected representative is not secure, ordinary citizens have even more reason to feel vulnerable.

Islam further insisted on a thorough investigation into the assault to ensure that the culprits receive the harshest punishment. He warned that if justice is not served, NEMSU would mobilize a large-scale democratic protest in response. His statement echoes the growing outrage among political and social circles, with many demanding immediate intervention by the authorities.

The attack occurred on February 20 at Natun Bazar when Rakibul Hussain was on his way to attend a Congress workers’ meeting in Gunabari. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of masked individuals, their faces covered with black cloth, intercepted his convoy, waving black flags before launching the assault. In the ensuing chaos, Hussain’s bodyguard was also attacked, further escalating tensions in the area.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with calls for swift action against those involved. However, the authorities have yet to release an official statement on the steps they intend to take in response to the attack.
