Assam: Nepal Woman Missing Since 2018 Found in Cachar Jail
Guwahati: A Nepalese man found his mother, who had been missing since November 2018, in a jail in the Cachar district of Assam for breaking Indian immigration laws.
The missing woman’s son, Feroz Leheri (26), is from the Lakshmipur region of Nepal’s Sarlahi district, which borders Bihar.
Lehari, his sister-in-law Anwar Leheri, and a relative named Sohana Khatun travelled to Silchar on January 9 to visit Lehari’s missing mother, Jannat Khatun, who they had learned was being held at the Silchar Central Jail’s transit camp.
Jannat Khatun purportedly came under arrest in the Katigora region of the Cachar district in November 2018. She was sent to the Silchar Central Jail after going through the legal procedures. Following the trial, the judge gave her a two-year prison term that will end on December 27, 2020. Currently, she is being detained in the Central Jail Transit Camp.
The Central Jail Superintendent wrote to the authorities after she had served her sentence. Jannat Khatun’s return to her own nation was not attempted, however, as the matter was suppressed.
Johnif Lehari, Feroz’s father, allegedly passed away a few years ago. Since his death, his mother has been looking after the family.
“My mother had a head injury in 2018. She suffered from mental instability after that, and she went missing from home one day. We looked everywhere but couldn’t find her. We also filed a missing person complaint at the Haripur police station, which is located in our neighbourhood. However, we were unable to locate her “Feroz said.
Feroz had given up on ever seeing his mother again despite his best attempts. He learned that his mother was imprisoned in Silchar several months ago through the Bal Suraksha Abhiyan in the Kalimpong district of West Bengal. They then connected with officials of the Nepalese government and got in touch with the centre via the embassy.
They eventually discovered that the procedure for bringing Jannat Khatun back to the nation had started. As a result, they raced to Silchar. “We aim to complete all treatments and return her in a day or two,” Firoz added.
He added that he could talk to his mother outside of jail and that she appeared to be completely normal.
“My mum is overjoyed to hear she may return home,” he said.
