Assam: New Era for Dhubri Judiciary as State-of-the-Art Court Building Inaugurated

Guwahati: Dhubri witnessed a momentous occasion today with the inauguration of its new court building, a significant upgrade to the district’s judicial infrastructure. The state-of-the-art facility, aptly named ‘New Court Building of Dhubri District Judiciary’, was formally opened by Justice Vijay Bishnoi, the esteemed Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.

The inauguration ceremony marks a pivotal step in strengthening the judicial framework of the region, promising a modern and efficient environment for legal proceedings. This development is widely anticipated to benefit both the legal fraternity and the general public of Dhubri, facilitating smoother access to justice for all.

The auspicious event commenced with Saraswati Vandana and was graced by the presence of Justice Soumitra Saikia, Judge of the Gauhati High Court and the Portfolio Judge of the Dhubri District Judiciary. Bablu Sutradhar, the District & Sessions Judge of Dhubri, extended a warm welcome to the attendees, alongside Dibakar Nath, the District Commissioner of Dhubri. Also present were Nurul Islam Choudhury, the president of the Dhubri Bar Association, esteemed members of the bar, legal professionals, and prominent town dignitaries.

The presence of such high-ranking judicial figures underscores the significance of this infrastructural advancement for Dhubri district. This upgrade reflects a strong commitment to fortifying the judicial system at the grassroots level and heralds a new chapter in the delivery of judicial services in the region.

Historically, Dhubri held a prominent position as the headquarters of the erstwhile Goalpara District from 1765. Over the centuries, the administrative and judicial jurisdiction of the region underwent several transitions under the East India Company and later within the Assam province. The district headquarters eventually shifted from Goalpara to Dhubri in 1879. Until the end of 1966, the judgeship of Goalpara District, encompassing the present-day districts of Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Chirang, and South Salmara-Mankachar, operated under the District and Sessions Judge of Lower Assam District, headquartered in Guwahati.

Intriguingly, the land on which the new court building stands carries a poignant history. It was the site of the official residence of the then District and Sessions Judge Upendra Nath Rajkhowa, the location of the horrific 1970 Rajkhowa killings that deeply impacted the state. Rajkhowa’s murder of his wife and two daughters, with the assistance of his helper Umesh Baishya, led to his eventual hanging in 1976 for the brutal crime.

Kamal Hussain Ahmed, the secretary of the Dhubri Bar Association, shared that the foundation stone for this new five-storey District Judicial Court building was laid on December 2, 2017, following the demolition of the ill-fated official residence. After nearly eight years of anticipation, the inauguration of this modern structure has brought immense joy to the lawyers of the Dhubri Court and the local community, symbolizing a fresh start and a renewed commitment to justice in the district.
