Assam: Newborn Girl Found Abandoned in Ledo, Community Shocked

Guwahati: A newborn girl was discovered abandoned in the remote village of No. 2 Kolpara in Ledo, Assam, in the early hours of August 28, in a heart-wrenching incident that has left the local community in shock.

The discovery was made by Samir Das, a resident, who was alerted by the faint cries coming from behind his house. He found the infant lying on the ground and immediately raised an alarm, gathering neighbours who quickly informed the authorities.

The Ledo police acted swiftly, arriving at the scene to rescue the child. They ensured the baby received immediate medical attention, transferring her to Margherita Civil Hospital/FRU. Dr Sanat Kumar Dutta, Deputy Superintendent of the hospital, conducted a preliminary examination and confirmed that the newborn is in stable condition, bringing a sigh of relief to those involved.

The incident has sparked a deep conversation about societal values and challenges within the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly constituency. Residents who witnessed the rescue operation voiced their anguish and concern. “This reflects deeper issues in our society,” a community member remarked, highlighting the underlying problems of social stigma and the lack of support systems for vulnerable mothers that might lead to such desperate acts.

The Margherita Co-District administration has taken up the investigation to trace the individuals responsible for the abandonment. While ensuring the infant receives the best possible medical care and protection, officials are working tirelessly to piece together the circumstances that led to this unfortunate event. The baby remains under careful medical supervision at the hospital, with staff continuously monitoring her condition. Child welfare authorities are poised to determine the next steps for the infant’s long-term care and protection.

Local police are treating this as a serious case of child abandonment and are conducting extensive inquiries in the surrounding areas to understand the sequence of events and the motive behind this act. The case has cast a somber light on the need for greater awareness and community support to prevent such incidents in the future.
