Assam: NF Railway Intensifies Ticket-Checking Drives, Collects ₹34.06 Crore in Penalties

Guwahati, 25th September: The Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway has ramped up its ticket-checking operations to ensure a seamless and comfortable journey for all genuine passengers. The initiative aims to curb ticketless and irregular travel, enhancing service quality and minimizing disruptions for lawful travelers.

Between April 2024 and September 22, 2024, a total of 3,96,101 cases of ticketless or irregular travel were detected, resulting in revenue of ₹34.06 crore through the collection of fares and penalties from offenders. This marks a slight increase from the same period last year, where 3,94,076 cases were identified, and ₹33.78 crore was collected. This represents a 0.51% rise in detected cases and a 0.82% increase in revenue from fines and fare recoveries.

In the ongoing 2024-25 financial year, from April to August, the NF Railway conducted three surprise ticket-checking drives, with the assistance of railway magistrates, to catch unauthorized passengers. As a result, 167 individuals were prosecuted, and 161 were fined for violating the Railway Act. These checks led to a total collection of ₹10.58 crore in fines.

The NF Railway has emphasized the importance of traveling with valid tickets and identity cards to avoid legal consequences. Passengers without proper tickets are subject to excess charges and penalties under The Railways Act, 1989. Those who refuse to pay may face prosecution.

To make ticketing more accessible, the NF Railway has encouraged passengers to use the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) mobile application, available on both Android and Apple devices, allowing them to purchase unreserved tickets from anywhere in the country.
