Assam: NH-27 Blocked as Tiwa Students’ Union Demands Eviction and Sixth Schedule Inclusion
Morigaon, Assam – Commuters faced significant disruption yesterday, July 10th, as activists from the All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU) brought National Highway 27 to a standstill in Morigaon district. The protest, which saw hundreds of ATSU members and other local groups blockade the highway at Nellie for approximately three hours, underscored pressing demands from the tribal community.
The agitation was primarily driven by two core issues: the urgent demand for the eviction of encroachers from reserved tribal belt and blocks, and the long-standing plea for the inclusion of the Tiwa Autonomous Council in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The strategic blockade effectively highlighted these concerns, drawing attention to the perceived infringements on tribal land rights and the aspiration for greater autonomy and protection under the Constitution.
While the protest remained largely peaceful, a minor scuffle ensued when police attempted to clear the blocked highway, indicating the resolve of the agitators. However, the situation was eventually de-escalated, and the protestors subsequently submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, outlining their demands to the local administration. The incident served as a potent reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by indigenous communities in Assam, as they continue to advocate for their rights and cultural preservation.
